An O-ring is a self-energizing round elastic seal that is used for static and dynamic applications. Their main purpose is to seal between surfaces such as pipes, tubes, and inside hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders. O-rings are made of various materials depending on how they will be used and are usually highly pliable. When placed between two surfaces, they block the leakage of liquids or gases.
Choosing the correct material for the O-ring’s application is important to ensure its proper performance. The application’s chemical compatibility, temperature resistance, and miscellaneous other factors determine the type of material. O-rings are made from various types of elastomers with the more typical ones being Nitrile (Buna)(NBR), Neoprene, EPDM, Fluorocarbon (Viton), and Silicone. Silicone, PTFE, and Fluorocarbon are used for high temperature applications. Silicone is only recommended for static applications.
When used as a static seal, an O-ring remains stationary to contain pressure or seal a vacuum. The dynamic sealing O-ring can be reciprocating or rotating compared to the surface it is sealing.
The function of the bearing or wearband is to guide the piston and piston rod in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, as well as to withstand arising side loads. Wearbands are used to prevent metal to metal contact of moving parts, which will damage and score the surfaces and eventually cause seal damage, leakage, and component damage. Wearbands center the piston and rod for optimum seal life. Wearbands made of glass-filled nylon material offer compressive strengths similar to most metals used for this purpose, and will ingest contaminants such as metal chips, thus avoiding scoring and seal damage. Nylon wearbands are easily cut down from larger sizes to fit any size piston or rod.
MA28 series metric urethane u-cups are non-symmetrical in design and are meant to be used only for reciprocating piston seals. They are manufactured slightly smaller in diameter than nominal dimensions. This ensures a tight fit when snapped over the piston. Good stability and decreased heel drag, resulting in lower friction, are the prime features of this seal.
